2008 Dragon*Con Charity Auction

The 2008 Charity Auction will be for the American Heart Association in memory of Patrick Roberts. Patrick was the Art Show director from 2000-2006 and passed away earlier this year from heart related issues. If you would like to donate something to the charity auction, please contact John Tackett, Director of Charity Events, at charityevents(at)dragoncon(dot)org, or at jtackett@bellsouth.net.

The American Heart Association

The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."

The mission statement was updated by the American Heart Association during its Annual Meeting in April 2007. The mission statement undergoes a formal review process every third year.

The association's impact goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010. Progress toward the goal will be measured according to these indicators:

  • Reduce the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke by 25 percent.
  • Reduce the prevalence of smoking, high blood cholesterol and physical inactivity by 25 percent.
  • Reduce the rate of uncontrolled high blood pressure by 25 percent.
  • Eliminate the growth of obesity and diabetes.

2008 Dragon*Con Blood Drive

2007 marked the 5th year of the "Pay It Forward" Blood Drive at Dragon*Con, sponsored by The Heinlein Society and LifeSouth Community Blood Center.

2007 also marked the centennial year of Robert A. Heinlein, the man who started the tradition of science fiction convention blood drives at MidAmericon back in 1976. Heinlein believed very strongly in blood donation and in giving to the community in general, in his words, "paying it forward." In addition to a lifetime of writing, this is part of the marvellous legacy he left us.

The success of this drive is a reflection of the wonderful generosity of the Dragon*Con community and a fitting tribute to the man who gave so much of himself to his SF family.

This year's blood drive will be held in the Marriott, on the Marquis Level (M) 202. The hours for donation are as follows:

  • Fri - 10am - 7pm
  • Sat - 10am - 7pm
  • Sun - 10am - 7pm
  • Mon - 9am - 3pm

Our goal for this year's drive is 600 units! Plese help us to continue Robert Heinlein's legacy.
